Letter from Congressman Capuano to Attorney General Holder

May 26, 2011

Dear Attorney General Holder:

I write today to communicate concerns expressed to my office regarding the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) ongoing investigation into several anti-war activists in the Midwest.

While I have no personal knowledge of the situation, it has been reported to me, by persons whom I know to be vigilant with regard to civil liberty, that several homes and offices were searched on September 24, 2010 pursuant to FBI warrants. My constituents and other concerned individuals also inform me that 23 people in Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota have been called to testify before grand juries in relation to this case. It is my understanding that these subpoenaed individuals have received very little information from the FBI about the nature of the investigation or what charges might possibly be brought against them.

If this information is accurate, why have the affected individuals been kept in the dark for a period of many months? If this is not accurate, could you please clarify the situation? I understand that the Justice Department limits its comments regarding ongoing investigations. Nonetheless, these reports are troubling, and I would welcome any information you could provide.

Sincerely,

Michael E. Capuano
Member of Congress
8th District, Massachusetts
